set all our bruised reeds to breaking and all our smoldered wicks snuffed out and how long Lord will we sing along? how long Lord will we sing? we speak violence in the place of love we speak silence in the face of dust set all their confidence to shaking we gave them reasons for their doubts and how long Lord will we sing along? how long Lord will we sing?

Monsters 03:58
falling downstream I hear your voice calling my name and I don't have a choice I go where you lead I follow my feet I hear monsters outside my door and they're sniffing me out I see their fangs as my name hangs from their terrible mouths they're coming for me with their jaws and their teeth now they've found me and I cannot move my legs trapped my spiderwebs I feel the gnashing of their teeth how they devour me

Floodplains 05:02
I see the sky blue sky turn red before my eyes I pray to God let rain come and flood this plain I see the vultures swarm the bodies are still warm I swear I see myself there among the dead what thoughts run through my head oh let it rain I see the towers rise I see them scrape the sky and I can hear you speak but don’t know what you mean I hear the drums of war I see that coming storm I pray to God let rain come and flood this plain come wash it all away pray to God the rain will come let it rain flood this plain

In Tongues 03:21
my stomach and thoughts are all tied up in knots I can’t speak and I’m speaking in tongues from the top of my lungs but it falls on your deaf ears I’m never more alone then here beside you now but I can’t move from here beside you now my arms they give way as they bend and the break I can’t move and I'm trapped between thoughts like hard places and rocks but you turn your eye from me I’m never more alone then here beside you now but I can’t move from here beside you now but if I'm never more alone then I am beside you now then why shouldn't I move from here beside you now?
6.
Joy/Pain 06:00
our joys shall pass to pain as sun shall pass to rain and pass to joy again all things pass away when pain and sorrow come oh you will not be overcome the pain that covers you will be the thing that carries you when the world falls away the pillars strong enough to stay will carry you oh the towers that we’ve made no, they cannot hold their weight let them fall let them fall

Pillars 07:21
on the bloodwatered banks of the Nile, i lost my way my eyes were wide, terrified by Your terrible plagues then Moses, he lifted his staff and he called my name o God of Abraham, come to take me away? O Pillar of Cloud Pillar of Fire where are You now cause I need a guide my pillars of salt are scattered behind burn it all down burn it all down on the desert banks of the red sea, I lost my faith I saw those horses and chariots coming my way then Rameses lifted his sword and he called my name is Egypt all out of graves that you’d take me away? BURN IT ALL DOWN

about

When we went to write Son of Man, it felt a bit like the world was ending—racial tensions were high, massive protests were becoming commonplace, and we were entering the most contentious election in recent history. Lyrically, most of the songs were centered around the things that survive through the world’s end.

Then, a few weeks after Son of Man was released, the world actually did fall apart in a lot of ways. A crisis struck my church where
I’m on staff. Some of my closest friends found themselves pinned under the weight of the trauma. I didn’t know if I would have a job in three months. People I trusted and partnered with for years became duplicitous and venomous.

After years of writing songs about the things that hold on when the world falls apart, my world actually did fall apart. And in the rubble, I found the things that really did matter, beaten by the trauma, but never broken, strengthened now in the furnace of calamity.

While I did not intend this to be as thematic a concept as Son of Man, the songs had their own idea. It wasn’t until a year after the crisis struck that I realized how much it had informed the songs I had written in that time. These are songs written out of a hope that disregards any sort of reason, common sense, or empirical evidence. And yet, it is a hope that does not disappoint.

Since writing these songs, crisis has come for us all. Division has become the norm in our politics and our discourse. Calamity has visited all of our houses. Many of us are living with the sudden realization that the things we put our hope and purpose and identity in might be a bit flimsier than we imagined. We’ve canceled tours, lost jobs, and mourned the loss of loved ones—whether to death or to the ever growing walls that divide our society.

Our hope is that these songs can bring a sort of hope, or at least a solidarity. Whatever calamity falls, may the Pillars of your life stand firm.

Stand firm.
nathaniel.
